Laumeier Sculpture Park focuses their collection on work that expands sculpture beyond the confines of museum walls. They currently hold over seventy large-scale, outdoor sculptures on the grounds of their 105-acre property. Our proposal for an entry terrace for Laumeier’s future Fine Arts Center distorts the conventional materials of a plaza to produce uniquely sculpted landscape features, providing a transition between the new building and the naturalistic setting of the sculpture collection. The concrete is distorted upward to create skewed containers for planting, and inverted downward to capture rain water. The north end of the plaza is made by deforming the normal cadence of a typical stair configuration in order to provide an area for informal performance, seating and circulation.
